Fraser Valley Neighbourhood Guides

Aldergrove

Traditionally, Aldergrove was mostly a farming community with a well-aged downtown core. In recent years Aldergrove real estate has had major development investments and is quickly becoming one of Langley’s most popular neighbourhoods. Aldergrove is home to the most affordable real estate in Langley and some of the most generous yards.

Overview of
Aldergrove

Aldergrove feels like its own town. Aldergrove is 15 minutes east of Langley’s core and shares a border with Abbotsford. In recent years, both commercial and residential development is starting to change the feel of Aldergrove. The farmer’s markets and quaint downtown core remain, but the expanding infrastructure allows Aldergrove residents to be less dependent on the rest of Langley for groceries and entertainment. Aldergrove real estate is the most affordable Langley real estate. You trade your quick commute west for bigger yards and much quieter streets.

Aldergrove's defining characteristics:

  • Aldergrove real estate feels the most “country” of all of the neighbourhoods of Langley. The neighbourhoods are flanked with working farms that add a charm unlike any other area in the Fraser Valley.
  • Aldergrove has some townhouses built in the 1970’s and Aldergrove Town Centre will add condos into the commercial core. However, Aldergrove real estate comprises mostly detached single-family homes and historic farms.
  • On Fraser Highway, you’ll find the downtown commercial core, Otter Co-op Outdoor Experience, and the Twilight Drive-In all in one stretch.

Aldergrove 's Atmosphere and Appeal

Why you will love living in Aldergrove

People love living in Aldergrove for the space and the tight-knit community. Langley is quickly becoming busier and busier each year, but Aldergrove has managed to keep its charm.

The atmosphere of Aldergrove

It’s easy to find a community in Aldergrove where the cars are infrequent enough that the kids in the neighbourhood yell “car” when someone comes home. Aldergrove is the type of area where a curfew can be set by the street lights.

Your Lifestyle In Aldergrove

Activities In Aldergrove

Aldergrove has lots to do! For such a small community, Aldergrove has a surprising amount of attractions for residents of all of Langley.

Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre

The Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre is undeniably the best pool/waterpark in Langley. They have a super fun lazy river, wave pool, and waterslides. You’ll need to prebook your tickets because they don’t have drop-ins.

The Greater Vancouver Zoo

The Greater Vancouver Zoo also finds its home in Aldergrove. When visiting the zoo, I highly recommend renting a family-size bike if your kids are slow walkers. The zoo is huge, so if your little ones aren’t good hikers, you could easily find yourself stuck on the far side of the zoo with tired kids. The dinosaur exhibit is pretty great, with life-size animatronic Dinos roaring every few seconds.

Twilight Drive-In

Twilight Drive-In Theatre is a cool change of speed from your traditional movie theatre and is a cool throwback to yesteryear.

Farming

Aldergrove has long been known for its rich farming history. They have several dairy farms and berry fields and recently opened the largest licensed cannabis facility in the world. When choosing your piece of Aldergrove real estate, be sure to understand the neighbourhoods and the potential smells coming from those neighbourhoods.

Getting Around In Aldergrove

If you work west of Aldergrove, you should expect your commute to be very heavy during the summer months, every Friday and days before and after long weekends because the entire Fraser Valley uses your route home to go camping. The heavy traffic typically starts at the 200th street exit and continues far past the 264th street exit for Aldergrove.

Food and Drinks In Aldergrove

I have a hard time visiting Aldergrove without picking up some Veronica’s Gourmet Perogies. If you’re close to the downtown core of Aldergrove you would be remiss not to grab some dinner. Every Friday, they have a hot lunch takeout from 12:00 – 2:00.

Fox & Hounds originally opened in England a few hundred years ago. When the original owner decided to move to the western frontier of Canada, he brought parts of his pub with him. Obviously, through time the pub has evolved with the community, but you can feel the history in this pub. They strive to be the common living room for all of Aldergrove.

Helms Mobile Kitchen is a fantastic food truck that shares a parking lot with the Aldergrove Legion. It is definitely worth tracking down, and they cater weddings if you’re feeling romantic.

The Aldergrove Real Estate Market

The downtown core of Aldergrove is going through a heavy change with this new master-planned community. Before this development was offered, most of Aldergrove condos and townhomes were forty or more years old. For local first-time home buyers in Aldergrove, this will increase the inventory of entry-level homes. This development will bring easier access to transit, urban services and new commercial units to an area full of mostly older buildings.
